Darshini (hotel)

A Darshini is a type of vegetarian fast food restaurant found in Bangalore and other parts of South India. The menu includes mostly South Indian breakfast dishes.The restaurant operates on self service principle.Here persons have to pay first to purchase tokens or coupons for dishes and then give it in the serving counter. They give dishes in a stainless steel plate or cup, the dishes are eaten on desk or table for keeping plates with dish and eaten while standing. Most of darshini's do not have chair's and tables for eating. Sometimes people eat by holding plate in one hand ( usually left ) and eating with another hand when ever there is rush inside or on road side to enjoy fresh air.The people keep the plates in a bucket provided after finishing the dish. A wash basin is provided generally in the corner of the darshini hotel for washing hands.

There are more than 5000 Darshinis in the Bangalore city.

A typical Darshini menu comprises rice based dishes like idly, vada , sambar and dosa. Now many darshini's serve even north Indian dishes are also served. Aromatic filter coffee is another attraction of darshini restaurants.

Although a Darshini is a fast food restaurant, there are some unique features which makes a Darshini different from a regular fast food restaurant.

They have a pay-first-eat-later concept. This concept adapted by the Darshinis is ideal for rush hour in Bangalore.

Darshinis usually are identified with small round steel tables.Patrons of a Darshini don't sit, but they stand around with their plates on the table as they have their food.

The Darshinis are low cost and serve food on the go.They occupy less space as compared to normal restaurant.They have neat and clean interior as compared to others.

The first darshini type of restaurant opened was Upahara Darshini near Netkallappa circle, Basavanagudi, Bangalore. Most of them are run by Kota Brahmin, Shivalli Brahmins and Koteshwara Brahmin
